On November 17, 2011, the Santa Barbara Bowl Foundation threw a year-end appreciation party for contributors to the American Classic Campaign. The event also commemorated the Towbes Family Café.

Front and center were Michael and Anne Towbes, along with Bowl Chairman, President and Executive Director: Scott Brittingham, Paul Dore and Rick Boller.

deadmau5 @ SBB

Closing out a record concert season at the Santa Barbara Bowl on October 27, 2011, was deadmau5, a top-notch D.J. from Canada. Described as a progressive, electro and house musician, deadmau5 filled the strange with all his lighting gear and perched himself atop it all.

Starting off with Sofi, there were five acts on Thursday night. Next came Jason Bentley who was followed by Le Castle Vania. By this time, it started getting darker, and when Feed Me came on, the lights came up. It was pure night for deadmau5, who did part of his act with live female vocals.

It was quite an evening for the photographers, who got to shoot the entire show from the right back corner of the floor. I shot thousands of images, and posted some really cool stuff on the Bowl's website at gallery.sbbowl.com

Back to Santa Barbara for the third time, indie rocker, Ben Gibbard returned with his band Death Cab for Cutie to play the Santa Barbara Bowl on October 15, 2011.

Opening for Death Cab was Explosions in the Sky, a sort of project band who played in a very dark lit stage.

Both acts were shot from the photo pit.

Tiesto @ SBB

The first ever all-D.J. show at the Santa Barbara Bowl was a huge success on October 6, 2011.

Local Westmont College duo, Tommy Noble, opened the show to a crowd of young, excited girls. Second Act, Porter Robinson, picked things up for headliner, Tiesto.

Tiesto hails from Europe, where has won a number of "Best D.J." contests. His show was interspersed with lots of strobes and effects, including blasts of smoke over the crowd's heads. Photography was a bit difficult as the D.J. platform was raised high above the photo pit. Most of my good shots were from a camera raised high above my head. There was a lot of trial and error, but I did get some good stuff.

Bright Eyes @ SBB

Kurt Vile & The Violators opened for Connor Oberst and his band, Bright Eyes on Sunday, September 25, 2011, at the Santa Barbara Bowl. Under very low light, I photographed both acts from the photo pit.

Wow! What an amazing show.

Two of my favorite bands (circa high school era) played on the same stage on the same night. And I got to shoot them both at the Santa Barbara Bowl on October 4, 2011. I cant put into words how fortunate I am to have this job.

Both shows were shot from the pit, and both had great lighting. As a bonus, I got to shoot Journey's encore, to capture a guitar give-away, when Neil Schon walked down from the stage and hung his instrument around a lucky fan's neck.

Fleet Foxes @ SBB

I photographed Fleet Foxes from the floor at the Santa Barbara Bowl on September 13, 2011. The lighting was pretty dark, but there were sporadic moments of dramatic color. The crowd seemed to know every word to every song, and the show was tight.

Ray LaMontagne @ SBB

Last night was interesting. The place from where the photographers were designated to shoot changed a few times. After shooting Vusi Mahlasela for a single song, I booked all the way back to my studio to grab a 300mm lens, which I was going to need for Ray LaMontagne.

By the time I got back to the staging area, I was sweaty and stressed out, and the second act, Brandi Carlile was already on stage at the Santa Barbara Bowl. The show was on September 11, 2011. The perky, petite powerhouse, Brandi really brought the house down with her fast-paced, country music. She was quite the charming crowd-pleaser. I photographed her also from the floor.

I had to shoot the headliner, Ray LaMontange and the Pariah Dogs, from up at the sound board. The lens I used wasn't the greatest, but I got a decent shot. My favorite images from the show were definitely of Brandi.

311 @ SBB

Big time party show at the Santa Barbara Bowl on August 21st, 2011. Surfer punk band Del Mar opened the show. I got to shoot their full set from the pit. Their drummer is part of Sublime, and his wife is the lead guitarist wearing the nice Fedora hat.

Next on was Sublime with Rome. I was not willing to sign their release, so I got a drink and watch their act, snapping off a few shots with my camera phone. Rome really controlled the stage as a seasoned musician.

By the time 311 came on, it was nice and dark, and as usual, their lighting was spectacular.

Katy Perry @ SBB

Locally raised, Katy Perry, came back to the Santa Barbara Bowl on August 12, 2011. The show was a major production that made Gwen Sefani rethink her last solo tour. Oh Land opened the show.

Shooting was from the sound board. I had a 400/2.8 lens for reach. I wanted to include her entire costume and body. The 600 would have been too powerful.

Even for just three songs, there was so much to shoot, from all the different dancers, to the stage extension, to the crowd. I got lots of good shots out of well over a thousand that I managed to shoot.
